How it works

How a GPA is calculated

  1. 1

    Turn each grade into points

Every letter grade has a value on the 4.0 scale: A is 4.0, B is 3.0, C is 2.0, and the plus and minus grades sit in between.

  2. 2

    Weight by credits

Multiply each course’s points by its credits, add them up and divide by the total credits. A full-year course counts twice as much as a semester one.

  3. 3

    Add the course bonus

For weighted GPA, Honors courses get +0.5 and AP, IB or dual-enrollment courses get +1.0 before the average is taken. A failing grade gets no bonus.

Questions

Common questions

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

Unweighted GPA puts every course on the same 4.0 scale, so an A is 4.0 whether the class was standard or AP. Weighted GPA adds extra points for harder courses, so an A in an AP class can count as 5.0. Colleges often see both.

How much extra do Honors and AP classes add?

The most common rule is +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP, IB and dual-enrollment courses, and that’s what this calculator uses. Some schools use other amounts or cap weighted GPA, so check your school’s handbook.

Is an A+ worth 4.0 or 4.3?

Most US schools cap an A+ at 4.0, which is what we use. A few count it as 4.3. If yours does, your real GPA will be slightly higher than the one shown.

What counts as a credit?

Usually a full-year course is 1 credit and a semester course is 0.5, but schools vary. If all your courses carry the same weight, leave every credit at 1.

I’m at an IB or British school. Can I use this?

Only if your school gives US letter grades. To see roughly what IB, A-level or IGCSE grades mean in US terms, start with the grade converter.

Is what I type saved anywhere?

No. Everything stays in your browser and is gone when you leave the page.
